The discovery at Piedras Negras of hieroglyphic Panel 15 in May of 2000 required the careful movement of the panel in preparation for transportation to Guatemala City. Archaeologist Ernesto Arredondo Leiva, who with Stephen Houston directed excavation of the panel, is at top right.

Rocks exposed by the dropping water levels during the dry season jut into the Usumacinta at Piedras Negras. The river bank at right is Chiapas, Mexico. The damage to the forest evident in the photo is from forest fires in 1998.

Work at Piedras Negras required the construction of a temporary lab space. This lab, built in 1998, was constructed from tarps and locally available materials. In subsequent seasons the lab was constructed from aluminum tubing brought into the site.
Excavations at Piedras Negras yielded enormous quantities of ceramics, which provided the basis for dating many of the buildings excavated and have revealed a great deal about the economy and social interactions of Classic period Piedras Negras.
